“In Batalla’s universe, instinct becomes sacred and the body becomes a path to harmony.”
— Miguel Ángel Batalla, The Taoist Universe of Miguel Ángel Batalla
Miguel Ángel Batalla’s work unfolds within a symbolic universe structured by three recurring forms: the square, the triangle, and the wave. Rooted in Taoist philosophy and inspired by African, Asian, and pre-Columbian traditions, his paintings explore the movement of energy through the body and the eternal balance between masculine and feminine forces.
The square represents order and containment; the triangle introduces tension, hierarchy, and exchange; and the wave gives movement to the life force. Through simplified lines, sensual curves, and symbolic figures, Batalla creates a visual language in which the horse, the cat, and the dove become metaphors for masculine energy, feminine energy, and harmony. Beneath the apparent simplicity of his forms lies a deeply emotional and spiritual world shaped by transformation, connection, and the search for equilibrium.
