Perspectivas Plásticas: Mastery in Motion

September 30, 2024

Thirteen artists and professors from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico present "Perspectivas Plásticas," an exhibition at Unknown Society in Bayamón. The participating artists include Eric French, Rigoberto Quintana, Carlos Marcial López, Omar Pagán Díaz, Maribel Canales Rosario, Bárbara Díaz Tapia, Nicholas Damiani López, Adelino González, Ramón Berríos Rivera, Yamileth Flores Reyes, Linda Sánchez Pintor, and Jotham Malavé Maldonado. As a special guest, they are joined by veteran visual artist and printmaker Haydeé Landing Gordon.

The exhibition opened on August 2 and will be on view at the Unknown Society gallery in Bayamón until October 26.

It's not every day we get the opportunity to witness the art of true masters. These artists, through their unique skills and diverse approaches, present us with pieces that tell important stories-personal and historical. Their works reflect the time in which they live, while highlighting their individual perspectives.

Bárbara Díaz Tapia's pieces, titled "Espécimen 1 and 2," made with acrylic, gold leaf, gel texture, gloss gel on canvas, and metal grommets, seem to flow like waves and set the tone for the exhibition. These works invite viewers to carefully observe each detail, demonstrating the artist's distinctive style. A committed feminist, Díaz Tapia often conveys beauty, strength, and even grotesque elements in her vibrant, dynamic art.

Haydeé Landing's pieces compel viewers to pause, reflect, and consider Puerto Rico's contemporary reality. Her works, titled "Promesa 1 and 2," address the profound impact of the law establishing Puerto Rico's Fiscal Oversight and Management Board, portraying this complex situation through striking three-dimensional paper sculptures. One piece features a screaming face, while another shows a pair of scissors below a serious, affected figure. These impactful artworks immediately seize the attention of anyone entering the exhibition.

Nicholas Damiani López, a distinguished figure in Puerto Rican contemporary art with over four decades of experience, exhibits his masterful command of form. His four ceramic sculptures, titled "Espacios geométricos," "Grietas olvidadas," "Círculo alquímico," and "Naturaleza y texturas," showcase textures and finishes-using oxides and glazes-that mimic cement, stone, and other materials.

I could continue describing each piece in detail, but I want to leave the discovery to you. My goal is to stir your curiosity and invite you to experience this remarkable exhibition for yourself. I was captivated by the talent, the expertly developed techniques and the profound messages conveyed, making this exhibition truly exceptional.

This exhibition elevates Puerto Rican artists internationally, strengthening my belief that we must create more opportunities for the global art community to see their work and hear their voices.

We extend our congratulations to our artist, Carlos Ayala, for opening the doors of his gallery, Unknown Society (US), and providing a wonderful space for this artistic endeavor to come to life.

A huge round of applause to everyone who contributed to bringing this experience to life!
