Poetic Reflection

Exhibition by Samuel E Vazquez
Carolina Santiago, 2026

Poetic Reflection is a retrospective exhibition of paintings, photographs, and assemblages by Samuel E Vazquez, organized by the Richard E. Peeler Art Center at DePauw University. Spanning several decades, the exhibition traces the evolution of an artist whose work is shaped by the intersection of Puerto Rican and New York identities.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Harlem and East Harlem, Vazquez emerged from the cultural landscape that gave rise to graffiti and hip hop. Those movements became the foundation of a visual language rooted in rhythm, transformation, and resilience. Through painting and assemblage, he reimagines discarded materials and everyday experiences as powerful expressions of memory, identity, and renewal.

Balancing improvisation with structure, Poetic Reflection reveals how Vazquez has transformed the energy of the streets into a sophisticated artistic practice. The exhibition offers a compelling exploration of personal and collective history through color, gesture, and material, affirming his place as a significant voice in contemporary American art.
