Ramon Bonilla

Biography

Biography

Ramón Bonilla is a visual artist working with elements of landscape and visionary architecture. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he earned a BFA from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico, where he studied under artist Zilia Sánchez. Bonilla is a 2025 grantee of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and currently lives and works in New Rochelle, New York. He also currently works as an art teacher for adults with disabilities.

For over a decade, Bonilla lived and worked in Denver, Colorado, where the surrounding topography and open landscapes left a lasting influence on his visual language. His time there also marked an important stage in his career: he completed a two-year residency at RedLine Contemporary Art Center, partially funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation, and was recognized by 5280 Home magazine as one of "The Five Local Artists to Watch and Collect."
He participated in Direction / Instruction, a group of international artists exploring geometry, form, and spatial composition. With the group, he presented his work in several exhibitions within and beyond Colorado.

In 2024, Bonilla completed an artist residency at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art in New Haven, Connecticut, where he also presented his solo exhibition Miradero. His art practice continues to evolve through the development of paintings, wall-works, installations, and bricolage. In his three-dimensional and wall-based pieces, he employs paper tape, reclaimed materials, vinyl, and found elements, all guided by a strong sense of spatial awareness.

Among his commissioned works, Bonilla has completed projects for the Gates Foundation Building and Meow Wolf.
